Besides geocaching, we enjoy orienteering and letterboxing along with hiking and biking.  Bike caching is probably our favorite and this year, we'll be trying it on a tandem bike.  Bike trails are usually lined with caches.  The 19 mile Gateway Trail here in St. Paul has about 40 of them. We also like to geocache or letterbox before and/or after orienteering meets, which typically last about two hours. That usually gives us a good four or five hours out and no guilt trip when we stop at DQ on the way home. We haven't tried Adventure Racing yet, but we recently worked one as  volunteers.  The three hour warm up races might not be too bad but we'll leave the 12 and 24 hour versions to the next generation.

These quests require planning and flexibility.  You've got to gather information, come up with a plan, fill in your information gaps and continue planning.  Then after all that, you need to be prepared to change it all on the fly when things don't quite work out.  That means having resources at your fingertips. Here are some particularly useful or interesting resources we've utilized in the field, in the classroom and at home.  As you can see, there are all kinds.

Geocaching, letterboxing, orienteering and similar activities are great real time, real world exercises in problem solving, decision making and setting priorities in addition to the technical stuff involved. If you are looking for a way to teach and motivate kids, get them active outdoors and have a lot of fun, give geocaching or one of its relatives a try.
