Scandia, MN is a small town in Washington County northeast of St Paul. It dates back to 1850 and was the first Swedish settlement in Minnesota. We went there to do some local geocaching and letterboxing. We also explored the Gammelgarden Museum. As usual, we sought out a local place for lunch. We found the Scandia Cafe. This little restaurant is loaded with rural charm, friendly service and great food. The inside decor is all about cows. There is cow wallpaper, stuffed cows, cow creamers, cow needlework, everything but a real cow. It has your usual small diner favorites and a whole lot more. What makes this diner special are the soups and the daily specials. The turkey noodle soup was the best we've ever had, full of big chunks of turkey and lots of flavor. The special on our first visit was turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy which would rival anyone's Thanksgiving fare. They serve that up every Sunday from 11 to 2. We've also had the vegetable beef soup and chili, which were great. If you want some good home cooking at a good price in a fun rural atmosphere, check out the Scandia Cafe. (Note: There's another Scandia, MN in Polk County near Grand Forks, North Dakota. Make sure you go to the right one!) Better get moooooving....The Cachemanian Devils |
