Alpha6 is from Pennsylvania and I'm from Wisconsin. In both states, we still have the neighborhood tavern where the locals hang out.
These bars are usually small, have  TV's tuned into sports stations, good food and the regular locals. One such  gem is in Osceola, a small town on the St Croix River. Called PY's, it's named  after the original owner Prosper Young who turned the former bank building into a bar in 1917.  It has been in continuous operation since. A friend  who lives in the area suggested we try it for lunch when we were geocaching in western Wisconsin. The menu is quite full with all kinds of sandwiches and baskets. We ordered our favorite post-geocaching meal - cheeseburgers and french fries.

The bartender did the cooking on a little grill behind the bar. The flamed broiled burgers were great, well done with good flavor. The french fries were wonderful. The cook/bartender took two raw potatoes, put them into a slicer and then directly into the oil for frying.  The result - a basket of fresh, skin-on fries that could have fed four people.  We, of course, ate them all. The locals drifted in and were soon playing dice. There are big flat-screen TV's at every angle along with a pool table and dart boards. This is the small town atmosphere that we really like and is a perfect place to unwind after a hard day of geocaching. The food was great, the service friendly and the bill with a $3 tip was less than $20.

So if you are near Osceola (geocaching or not) and looking for a good food at a good price, stop in at PY's and enjoy the fries.
